World War 2 films featuring war-time train subjects and modern day military transport trains – in two countries – make up this unique video. “Troop Train” is the first film, a black and white sound film showing the creation of a special train. “Hospital Train” is a color film depicting the care wounded soldiers got and transfer from Hospital Ships to hospital trains to get them home. You will see some steam power in both films, and some neat scenes inside the trains, with soldiers and so forth. The “Troop Train” film was probably made in early 1942 and likely sent to the Pacific theater, possibly Australia.

In Hospital Train, you will see a Hospital Ship arrive at what looks to be a west coast port, and the train appears to be either Southern Pacific or Santa Fe. Both of these films were made by the Military in the 1940’s. Another short WW2 era film is called “Unnecessary Travel”. In addition to these WW2 era films, included are a few trains shot by Greg Scholl including a German tank transport train shot in 1974. We wrap it up with a contributor’s shot of a 2006 BNSF tank transport train near Caliente, California. This train has Abrams-style tanks and even has a pusher on the rear.

Trains & the role they played in war is something we should never forget. This video does a fine job showing us scenes from WW2, as well as more modern day movements in the USA & Germany. Steam & diesel are seen working hard. History is preserved for us never to forget and to appreciate what the railroads have done to help give us our freedom we know today.

This 2008 DVD features film from a number of sources, including Greg Scholl’s silent footage from 1974 of steam in Germany. The rest of the footage is more modern and with sound, including 1989 action with Union Pacific and MKT at Julesburg, Colorado, plus 1991 action at Leipsic Ohio. Finally there is 2006 action of BNSF in the Tehachapi Mountains of Southern California. Altogether an interesting variety of trains, locations and eras.

If you like trains and tanks, this program is for you. I do wish it had more vintage film. There is a lot of stuff available from World War 2 that would have been nice to see.
