Over 150 years ago, the B&O Railroad reached Cumberland, located strategically at the eastern base of the Allegheny Mountains, and constructed a large terminal there to support operations over its two legendary grades: the West End and Sand Patch. In 1992-1993, Iron Horse America visited Cumberland Terminal to document B&O’s successor, CSX Transportation. The result is an in-depth, inside view of active railroad towers, hump yard operations, the freight car maintenance shop, and the locomotive servicing complex.

Interspersed with this detailed look at the terminal, you’ll also see bustling mainline action in the town of Cumberland. A variety of trains pass through and are switched at the Baltimore Street Interlocking. At the same time, CSX F-units are preparing an excursion train for a trip over the mountains. You’re even treated to a ride behind a steam locomotive as the town celebrates the Terminal’s 150th Anniversary! You can expect a fascinating tour of B&O’s famous terminal and a fast-paced conclusion as you visit Cumberland, Maryland in Volume 2 of our “Into The Allegheny Range” series!

  1. Curtis Watson

There is an impressive amount of variety in this program, from the early CSX liveries, to those of the predecessor roads like Chessie System, to the John Bull locomotive replica in operation. For fans of this transitionary era in railroading, or this region, I would highly recommend this program!

  2. devon

Great action around Cumberland terminal. See early CSX at it’s best. Lots of chessie engines rining around. See scenes that will never be produced again. Great video quality and scenes.

  3. Mwdonoughue

This program shows action in and around Cumberland, Maryland. Action includes repair shops, yard activity and mainlibe freight and passenger trains arriving and departing. Some highlights include the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and Railfest.

  4. Lloyd

A little bit of everything that CSX had in Cumberland Maryland in the early 1990’s. Lots of big heavy freights, on the move and being switched, and at the hump yard. See a tour of the maintenance shops, the locomotive shops, the railroad towers. To add to a great video is an excursion train & a steam locomotive. Really a fine presentation by Iron Horse America and later Pentrex.

  5. aw

If you like vintage CSX power this is the video for you. There is a lot of steam as well. I recommend this and the first volume if you like main line action. Learned a lot about railroading in Cumberland MD. Worth the purchase for sure.

  6. Ricky

While majority of the video shows diesels, there is a short segment of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad with the now gone LS&I 734.

  7. Arthur
