Dolton, Illinois, is where CSX & UP cross the Harbor Belt on Chicago’s south side. Dolton, apart from being really ugly, has a lot of trains and an active tower. I was fortunate enough to be invited into the tower by towerman Ralph on two afternoons, which was really good, since I got some nice interior shots, and out of the rain. The train of the day is the bottle train, taking molten steel from one mill to another, in big insulated bottle cars. I saw power from UP, CSX, NS, CR, BNSF, CP, IHB, ST.L&H, WC, SOO, and a bunch of leasers. Since Ralph was nice enough to give me lineups, I was able to identify most trains.

Dolton has everything you look for in a “Hot Spot” — a good viewing location, non-stop trains, colorful locomotive lash-ups and just about every consist you can imagine. The video was shot more than 20 years ago, so there are plenty of locomotives from railroads that are now fallen flags. Highball’s videography is always well done and, coupled with the sound of the trains, this program gives you a good feel for what it would be like to spend a day trackside in Dolton.

Dolton is always interesting, no matter who has produced a video on it. This is no exception. Lots of trains from various companies. Seeing inside the tower is very interesting as we learn some of how it works. My favorite was watching the hot steel train on the move, known as the “bottle train”. Good production.

Good show, lots of trains. Bottle trains look neat. Just right in running time for me.
