This is BNSF’s Marceline Sub between Kansas City, Missouri and Fort Madison, Iowa. BNSF & NS share tracks for 35 miles east of KC, and UP has trackage rights for plenty of variety. Lots of new “Premium Heritage” units, still a decent amount of Warbonnets, and the trains are moving right along (mostly!) on the raceway east of KC, then through the scenic wooded hills of northern Missouri. Even caught the 4449 a couple of times, of course it’s a C44-9W!

America’s heartland has a special kind of beauty, and this program shows it at its best … with a fascinating display of big-time railroading. BNSF was relatively new when this video was released in 1999, and locomotives are still wearing the colors of its predecessor railroads, along with early “pumpkin” schemes and cameo appearances from Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern. Solid videography, interesting locations, colorful locomotives, a variety of consists … all in all, a nice addition to any railfan video collection.

The USA heartland is a great location for lots of trains running at speed as it is not overly hilly and runs through a great agricultural district in Missouri to Iowa. Where there are hills, the scenery is very good to see. The variety of power on this line is excellent with BNSF, NS & the UP all using it. I really enjoyed the video for the train action…. however….. the narration is not to Highball standards as we know. It did not take long to question why I purchased the video. While I did finish watching it, I will never watch it again. Sorry Highball….. this video is not a great one thanks to the narration.

Beside the narration problems, this is a great video, lots of mixed SF and BN power as well as bnsf orang.

The footage was great, but if I remember correctly, they don’t use the good narrator with the English accent in this one. they use one with one of the most stereotypical and hard to listen to peppy narration voices, which is why, though the footage is well shot, and lots of good trains appear, I probably wont watch this show again.
