See the SP battle back to respectability in the early 90s. The aborted merger with the Santa Fe during the 1980s left both lines greatly weakened and the SP seemed to be the worst victim. Both lines made heroic turn-arounds but this story is how the SP pulled it off. The Extreme part of the title isn’t kidding. The location covered are the toughest places the SP had to grapple with. We feature many specially created maps and graphical grade profiles to bring greater understanding of these lines.

Lines to the north, Cascade and Shasta, Donner Pass, and rare Modoc Line views. The Modoc Line is another example of a Union Pacific “redundant-reject” in their plans — once they captured the SP property as their own. Many choice scenes from hundreds of hours of material to show the great variety of SP power and scenic locations. Some of the material is from early 1970”’s film to round out the presentation. Don’t miss the great snow fighting on the Donner Pass Line. Cabooses and a parade of great SP power!

Great program, wide range of EMD’s and some GE’s but for the most part all shot before wide cabs took over class one railroading. See SP battling the elements on Donner and up mountain grades on the Modoc line. Good quality and narration. Plus SP EMD’s….enough said.

  2. Curtis Watson

Always fun to see SP, especially in its last few years. Not much scenery on the Modoc line, but this video had more coverage of it than a lot of other videos out there. All-around great footage of a great railroad. Perfect for SP fans/collectors.

  3. Dan

Capturing the essence of a railroad as diverse, embattled and well-loved as the Southern Pacific is a daunting challenge for a railroad video producer. Trust Charles Smiley Presents to meet the challenge, and knock it out of the park! This is the story of the SP of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, told with the usual Charles Smiley flair. Classic equipment, legendary locations, maps and graphics that add to the “documentary” style of Smiley’s videos, and snow fighting scenes that will make you appreciate watching the action from your living room. Don’t miss this one!

SEE LINES TO THE NORTH, TO THE CASCADES AND BEAUTIFUL SHASTA MOUNTAINS, DONNER PASS AND RARE MO DOC LINE VIEWS. SOME OF THE MATERIAL DATES FROM THE EARLY 70’S. SEE CABOOSES GREAT

Smiley videos are a must if you love the SP like we do! This video shows SP in the early 90’s when it was starting to make a comeback. It shows a lot of the then new power like SD70Ms and GP60s. I has a short section that shows some good footage of snow fighting on Donner during the winter. The video also shows a lot of D&RGW power since by that time they were the same railroad.

Le me just start by saying that Charles Smiley has done it again with this film. Absolutely amazing footage. Shows the classic eSPee and the Modern eSPee. All forms for motive power, great locations, and very very very informative. If you’re a true SP fan like myself, you’ll really enjoy this film.

Various locations across Northern California, with lots of the many different locomotives in the SP family working grades over 2%. There are some shots of other RR companies including UP, SOO, WP, Rio Grande, McCloud, Central Oregon & Pacific, etc… Movie includes the fight to save SP from bankruptcy before the UP takeover, with some of the history of the lines included. Some added scenes are a derailment remains, a few “free riders”/hitchhikers, and a couple of yellow U-Boats with a slug in transit. 45 minutes are in the Shasta area with many beautiful scenes of the region. 11 minutes are in Donner Pass with snow fighting equipment working. See bulldozers, spreader plows and rotary plows hand at work. Surprisingly, there is actually more snow fighting in this movie than in Donner Thunder. The seasons are well covered on the Modoc and Shasta lines, and primarily winter in Donner Pass. A movie well worth purchasing.
