Far off in the wilds of eastern Quebec, isolated railroads haul heavy trains of iron ore from remote mines to docks along the St. Lawrence River. Volume 1 of Eastern Quebec’s Ore Lines covers the action on two of these hard working operations. The Cartier is an all-Alco powered railroad, with a fleet of big, six-axle M-636s growling and smoking as they lug long trains across the line. Also featured is the Quebec Iron & Titanium Romaine River Railway. It’s one of the most remote railroads in all of North America. No access roads had been built in 1993 when this production was originally released, so workers had to be transported to the facility by passenger train.

The scenery is gorgeous and the railroad action is non stop here. Cartier’s big ALCo are dazzling as they work their way across Quebec’s beautiful landscapes. We visit the open pit mine and learn how the iron bearing rock is processed. At Port Cartier, we’re treated to a tour of the locomotive and car shops. A visit to the dispatcher’s office reveals a modern computerized CTC system in operation. Now, in Volume 1 of Pentrex’s Eastern Quebec’s Ore Lines you can experience the thrill of big time, heavy haul railroading at its finest, filled with Alco power and incredible scenery.

In part 1 of the recently turned 30 year old 2 part set, there are a variety of diesels in Eastern Canada primarily on the Quebec Cartier railway with the line that has 50% curves. Plus, there is also the Quebec Iron & Titanium Romaine River Railway.

Locations in part 1 include Milepost 31.3 where the crossing signs are covered in blue tarp before they’re activated in later weeks, Walker Lake with a porcupine hiding in the bushes, MP 32, MP 21.6, Able Siding, Port Cartier with a rusty container ship on the St. Lawrence River, & 2 loaded cars each are placed at a rotary dumper, plus a visit to the Dispatcher’s office. There is also McDonald Falls with the MP 29.6 tunnel, MP 32.5, Charles yard, MP 60 north of Dog Siding, Lake Jeannine, Gagnon, Fire Lake at MP 223.5, MP 237 near Rob, MP 249.5, MP 256 near Black Spruce, Mt. Wright near Lake Hess at MP 260 that has a giant turning loop as well as a size difference between the chevy suburban & a dump truck, MP 23.5, MP 242 at Rob Siding, Queen Siding, a Yard called Love with Bunk Houses for the workers, & Harve St. Pierre.

Many Alcos were first built for the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range, Union Pacific, & Canadian National, while others are built exclusively for the Quebec Cartier. On the Romaine River Railway, A High Hood GP9 is in charge of a passenger train with coaches built for CN, & later Via Rail. There is also another GP9 but it is in chopped nose mode & paired with an MP15 on a freight. An Alco S4 is placed on display. One or car is referenced to a CSX F-unit built as Clinchfield 200 & later Western Maryland 67.

if You love long heavy trains… with Alcos in the lead…. This is for you. The remote region of eastern Quebec is the feature location, with plenty of extra like seeing a pit mine, fantastic scenery, the port region on the mighty St. Lawrence River . One of the best videos made covering mining operations and haulage.
