In the wilds of eastern Quebec, isolated railroads haul heavy trains of iron ore from remote mines to docks. This two disc set covers 5 serious mining roads. Volume 1 of Eastern Quebec’s Ore Lines covers the action on two of these hard working operations. The Cartier is an all-Alco powered railroad, with a fleet of big, six-axle M-636s growling and smoking as they lug long trains across the line. Also featured is the Quebec Iron & Titanium Romaine River Railway. It’s one of the most remote railroads in all of North America. Volume 2 features heavy, long trains of the Quebec North Shore & Labrador. Operating some of the longest ore drags in the world at 256 cars, the trains pass through beautiful scenery in eastern Canada. Operations on the Wabush Lake Railway and the Arnaud Railway are also included in our presentation.

Locations in part 1 include Milepost 31.3 where the crossing signs are covered in blue tarp before they’re activated in later weeks, Walker Lake with a porcupine hiding in the bushes, MP 32, MP 21.6, Able Siding, Port Cartier with a rusty container ship on the St. Lawrence River, & 2 loaded cars each are placed at a rotary dumper, plus a visit to the Dispatcher’s office. There is also McDonald Falls with the MP 29.6 tunnel, MP 32.5, Charles yard, MP 60 north of Dog Siding, Lake Jeannine, Gagnon, Fire Lake at MP 223.5, MP 237 near Rob, MP 249.5, MP 256 near Black Spruce, Mt. Locations in part 2 include the Moisie River Bridge & tunnel, Milepost 9 with the only grade crossing on the mainline, the north end of Sept Isles Yard with a visit to the dispatcher’s office & the operating room of the rotary dumper where just like the Cartier in part 1, it takes only 2 cars at a time to get the unloading process done, the junction to connect with the QNS&L, & Arnaud, the tunnel at MP 11, Tellier with a Maintenance of Way site, Saumon Camp, Alongside the Nipissis River, Tika at MP 57 to not only meet with a MOW car, but also passing by a line of freight with bunk cars for the workers, Doree Siding, the tunnel at MP 64.8, Tonka Falls, Waco siding to meet with a freight, stopping at Mai for a crew change (note the Helicopter in the parking lot), Eric Siding at MP 138, Oreway, Ross Bay, Labrador City, Wabush, Opocopa, the Ashuanipi River bridge, & Point Noire.

The wilderness of eastern Canada is nearly pristine; untouched by humanity except for the railroads. These films are fantastic on their own, but even better together. Very enjoyable seeing these lines at work!

This set documents some distinctive locomotives that operated in a remote, obscure location that most of us will never visit. The video does an excellent job of documenting a very harsh environment and is to be appreciated for that. But like so many of these one commodity operations, be it Powder River coal trains, double stack container trains, or even unit grain, frac sand or, ethanol trains, how many more do you need to see? Actually after the locomotives and the first few cars pass, there is nothing left to look at, for me. In this one, the regular cabbed, MLW diesels and the lack of graffiti are the high points of this production. As is normal for a Pentrex video, it would be a lot better with on-screen graphics replacing some of the excess verbiage. Great photography and sharpness, typical of a Pentrex DVD make this a must, for one who quests after 251 powered machinery.
