Only 30 of these 5000HP brutes were produced and they all became property of Conrail. For a brief period, these engines became standard power on the Boston Line for several scheduled trains, and we filmed them hauling trains from Eastern, NY to Eastern MA! All 30 of the SD80MAC’s built are seen in this program!

  1. Brian La Rosa

The SD80MAC is a very special EMD locomotive in terms of its size and power, even though Conrail was the only purchaser of that type. The DVD itself works great; I could not find any major problems whatsoever. It also has very informative commentary explaining some interesting facts about the SD80, which may eventually fade into history. This is a splendid video for a modern Electro-Motive enthusiast, especially in honor of the builder’s 100th anniversary in 2022! Thank you Railfan Depot!

Note: This review was originally written as feedback via eBay because I bought the SD80MAC DVD from Railfan Depot through that platform in January 2022.

The Boston Line is a legendary stretch of eastern railroading, and it was once the domain of Conrail’s handsome SD80MACs. The line provides a scenic backdrop for the trains, the camerawork is nicely done, and the narration adds to your understanding of the locomotives, trains, history and geography of the area. A great addition to any collection!

Here is a great video presentation on some of Conrail’s finest power. The territory is very scenic and rolling requiring a need for heavy horsepower. The producer has done a fine good covering the line and showing us the fine work that Conrail was doing at the time. Highly recommended for all rail fans.
