614 Coal Trains is an unusual video of steam action in regular service on coal trains in the dead of winter. January of 1985 saw six different working days with four eastbound coal trains, and two westbound empties. These coal trains are one of more dramatic steam events of the last several decades. It has all the elements: Big steam with C&O 614 4-8-4, the engine running on its home rails in C&O territory, cold winter action and regularly scheduled trains! The purpose was to test steam capabilities at that time and so 614 pulled real revenue freight. 614 Coal Trains was originally shot with older equipment, not on a tripod and with no narration. This newly re-edited version features narration, titles and additional footage.

Another very thorough and complete program put to DVD from GSVP… 614 REALLY puts on a show through the New River Gorge from Huntington to Hinton, West Virginia and return. It doesn’t get any better. 🙂

  2. NRH

Love to see steam trains in the winter, especially the big 4-8-4’s running, great video for the technology they used in the 1980’s

This 2011 DVD Features 614 on a Special Month Long Coal Train Throughout January 1985. Also This Was one Of Greg’s First Videotapes Ever Made During The Early Years Of His Video Business. Yes I Know The Panasonic Supertube Era was Floppy & Lousy Back Then. But over 25 years later, Greg Tried His Best To not Only Re-edit The Old School Program, But also Color Corrected the Picture Quality, And marks the final Chapter of his 614 trilogy.
