Head to Chicago and the old lines of the Chicago & North Western Railroad north into South Central Wisconsin. This footage was shot just prior to the UP taking over the C&NW. The C&NW Railway is seen from Chicago, Proviso Yard with trains going north to Janesville, Madison, Devil’s Lake, Baraboo, North Freedom, Rock Springs and Reedsburg. This video features unit auto trains, local and general freights, rock trains and plenty of MP15 switching action. You’ll also see the connecting railroads of the Soo Line and WSOR.

As an added feature you’ll also see the C&NW steamer #1385 powering passenger trains at the Mid-Continent Railroad Museum, and inside look at the North Western’s ballast quarry and mining operations at rock springs and the Circus World’s annual circus train out of Baraboo. Map included.

  1. Dan

More than 25 years after becoming part of the vast Union Pacific system, the Chicago & North Western is alive and well! And this program has a little bit of everything: a variety of locomotive types, the C&NWs handsome paint schemes, everything from locals and yard switching to road freights, fallen flags, steam action, a circus train, bustling locations like Proviso Yard, and the kind of small town and wide open scenery granger railroads are known for. Shot just before the UP bought the C&NW in 1995, the camerawork and editing are up to Plets Express’ usual high standards. Together with the Plets programs “C&NW In Northwest Wisconsin” and “C&NW’s Iron Ore Route”, this is an unbeatable trio that belongs in every railfan’s collection!

I big fan of Plets Express as his videos are put together nicely. Plets Expres really did their research on these productions. I recommend any Plets Videos if you like informative Narration and good picture quality.
