Get an inside look at this two year restoration project. Rail Innovations was the official videographer, able to capture scenes and interviews that no else could get! This two DVD set begins with the restoration of this great steam locomotive: Teardown, rebuilding and testing of CPR 2816. You’ll get commentary from the shop and cab footage as the engine heads out for a mainline test run. This is rare footage as steam locomotives are rarely rebuilt and rarely with the kind of resources Canadian Pacific gave to this project.

The second DVD of this set captures the 5-day inaugural run, the first major trip for the restored 4-6-4 Hudson number 2816 over the Canadian Pacific mainline. Each day is shown with good coverage from the train, trackside runbys, and even some footage in the cab. In the more remote regions like east of Revelstoke we see great coverage from a helicopter which allows breathtaking views of remote bridges along Rogers Pass as an example. You will be there for the best coverage available of this premier run of a beautiful locomotive and witness some of the best scenery North America offers.

In part 1 of the return of the hudson itself, the driving wheels we’re sent to the TVRM in Chattanooga while the boiler was sent to the since been gone Brooklyn yard roundhouse in Portland OR.

In part 2, the future Famous Rocky Mountain Express Star made its ultimate debut special from Vancouver to Calgary & back which includes a Cab ride.

These 2 titles were some of the 10 RI programs that were acquired by Greg Scholl in 2011.

When CP restored 2816, they started more than just a new train – the history and feeling of this train, getting to see big (for Canada) steam truly work going over mountain passes with shining passenger cars is almost indescribable.

This video has great shots and information of the restoration and the entire run across 5 subdivisions from Vancouver to Calgary. It’s a great way to remember, now that 2816 has dropped her fires, possibly for good.
