See the railroad as the engineer does, ride in the cab over Kicking Horse Pass – from Field to Lake Louise. We ride in a new SD40-2F wide cab unit. #9020 is the lead diesel on a 3-unit freight eastbound. We watch the train arrive at Field, the crews changed, and off we go inside the cab up the famous Kicking Horse Pass. Most views are straight ahead through the front of the cab as you enjoy the line and pass through both Spiral Tunnels, where you see the rock walls of the inside of the tunnels. There is a bit of drama as one unit dies just as we exit the upper Spiral Tunnel, and we have to make an unscheduled stop. We also get a brief explanation of the controls by the engineer, and pass a westbound freight in the siding at Divide as we conquer the Summit before going downgrade into Lake Louise Station. The video ends as 9020 leads the train out of Lake Louise.

This installment of the ‘Western Canada Series’ features a cab ride aboard a Canadian Pacific widecab diesel from Field, BC to Lake Louise, AB, over Kicking Horse Pass, which includes footage inside the Spiral Tunnels.

As railfans, most views are from ground level, off railroad property, or on bridges looking down as the trains pass by. While it is enjoyable, it does not really give us the prospective that the head end crew gets. Cab ride videos give us the look that the engineer and conductor have when moving a heavy slow freight. One of the most scenic, intriguing regions of railroading is the Canadian Pacific Railway’s crossing of Canada’s Rocky Mountains. In this video, it is a cab ride from Field British Columbia to Lake Louise Alberta. This the the spectacular territory of the “Kicking Horse Pass” and the famous Spiral Tunnels. The scenery of the region is 2nd to none, but note that the video is in the early spring. The main ground colour is brown with the white of some patchy snow and white capped mountains, so the only variation in colour is the evergreens. We are able to hear some cab chat, but listen carefully, as it is not always clear. This is not high speed country. It takes over an hour to cover the 20 miles (32km). It is a great video for a cab ride and a welcome to anyone’s collection.

This was an okay movie-though not enough action. You see the train arrive at Field and see the crew change. Most of the view are straight ahead, so you see what the engineer sees. You get to travel the spiral tunnels and get to see the inside of these rock wall tunnels. Some great scenery as well. This film is 77 minutes long.

I was a Little Disapointed with this Production the Video Goes from Field to Lake Louis so you don’t go past Morants Curve, Banff and more i had expected it to be the Full Ride from Field to Exshaw
