This is the story of the passenger train that changed the face of America. Railroading was never again the same after Ralph Budd, president of the CB&Q Railroad, sent his diesel-powered sensation, the new Zephyr, hurtling down the rails, non-stop from Denver to Chicago, 1017 miles in 785 minutes. This is not only the story of that run, photographed from the ground, the air and on board, but also the story of the Burlington Route’s all stainless fleet: Twin Cities Zephyr, The Denver Zephyr, The California Zephyr and another dozen Zephyrs.

It shows the beginnings of internal combustion passenger trains and includes Budd’s only major competitor, The Union Pacific all aluminum M-10,000. The final scenes of the California Zephyr on Soldier Summit and in the Feather River Canyon include some of the best vintage color footage there is of this famous train.

Narration. Sunday River Productions programs may feature Color film, B&W film, Music, Dubbed Sound and still photos.

Originally released in 1994, this program covers great early diesel action on what life was like before the Debut of Amtrak as well as people traveling in Airplanes & Automobiles.

Before we get to the streamliners, there are films of motorcars on the Bridgton & Harriston, & Sandy River & Rangely Lakes in Maine as well as the Rio Grande Southern Galloping Goose in Colorado, The Boston & Maine’s Kennebec limited, Canadian National, & Canadian Pacific.

Locations include Broad St. Station in Philadelphia, South Station in Boston Massachusetts with a visit from the Union Pacific M-10,000, Schenectady New York (Headquarters of Alco), Missouri River Bridge, Chicago, Moffat Tunnel on the Rio Grande, Bond with a look at a D&RGW standard gauge 2-8-8-4, The Feather River Canyon in California, the Pacific Ocean, Santa Barbara with a parade in town, Sacramento, Salduro, the Royal Gorge, Omaha Nebraska, Kansas City, the Mississippi River bridge, Aurora in the winter with steam engine 637 on the service track, Burlington Iowa, Lincoln, & Soldier Summit.

Not only there are tons of trackside scenes, but there are also footages from onboard the coaches, as well as behind the scenes angles of the original Silver Streak movies that includes an 0-6-0 with gondolas going backwards for example. Plus, a Cab Ride on the final run of the Pioneer Zephyr.

In a couple of scenes, the Zephyr is playing a game of tug of war with people on the tracks.

Near the end of the program, there are color films of the California Zephyr on the D&RGW & Western Pacific by Mac Owen, which includes a pair of Rio Grande Geeps leading the mixed streamliner while heading west.

A handful of the 1934 test run footages were also used in a few TM Books & Video titles: Lionel Nation part 3, & I Love Toy Trains part 3.

What a great movie this. Lots of action in so many locations, also great scenery and in your face action. The only downer is it is only 1hr long, other than that a great dvd.

Although only an hour in length, this video has a lot of good footage of the Burlington Zephyr in various locales. It is a well produced video and all rail fans will enjoy watching this one over and over again.
