Once leading the country’s finest passenger trains on high-speed schedules, the last remaining fleet of Electro-Motive E-units worked during their later years pulling commuter trains in Chicago. Pentrex filmed these timeless machines in the early 1990s, capturing their sleek lines and throaty exhaust in exciting line-side action and thrilling cab ride footage just before they were retired from Metra duty. For a nostalgic look at rare power actively still at work and the engineer’s view of the route they travel, treat yourself to Burlington Northern E-Units, Along the Racetrack!

Climb up into the cab of BNE-9 #9914 and ride the entire line from Chicago’s Union Station out to Aurora. Watch as the engineer skillfully brings the machine from notch 8 to a screaming stop at stations along the line. Listen as the throttle is ratcheted through the notches and the dual-engine machine responds with rumbling exhaust talk. You’ll get a view of the triple track BN mainline as you’ve never seen it before! The afternoon Dinky Parade, as the railroaders call it, is a dispatcher’s nightmare, with train after train scheduled for action. The route to Aurora is filled with curves, bridges, and scenic stations and many thrilling meets occur as you speed down the “racetrack.”

A program with old E Units in regular service? A program for me! Only an hour long but I enjoyed the Cab Ride and many runbys of the old locomotives in Notch 8. The many stations in the 30 + miles of line are covered in good detail. This was an enjoyable program back when it was released almost 30 years ago, and still is today

Keep in mind that this hour long video was recorded during production of today’s Chicago railroads. Besides these unique E units, There is some freight yard action, meets with freights, plus some Amtrak trains with F40s. Some of the stations are unique to look at.

I loved all the locations, action, and explanation of the video. Pentrex always does a great job of putting these together. Would definitely recommend this to anyone considering purchasing it! Especially if it’s on sale!

When it comes to movies about the railroad or railfanning Pentrex is widely considered the measuring stick. So when I bought this DVD I knew I there would be good production quality behind it. This DVD focuses on the E-units operating on the racetrack and captures some great footage from track side and inside the cab. Some history is discussed and the smooth narration does not distract from your viewing pleasure. The only negative about this DVD was a quick section of narration audio was a bit off for all of 5 seconds but then was right on point again in the next scene. The subject is a bit dry but the sights are amazing. Do your research as the price on this DVD seems to fluctuate.

This is one of Pentrex’s best videos in my opinion. Was a good mix of freight and passenger, although obviously its mostly passenger trains. It centers around an interesting time on the BN. Informative narration and very good photography. My favorite part is the in-cab footage and cabrides.

I was very fortunate to have witnessed the E-Units on the Racetrack on a couple of occasions in the early 1990s before they were gone and this video captures all the sights and sounds of them perfectly!!! It’s hard not to appreciate the quality with which these CB&Q workhorses kept working when all other E-Units had been preserved or scrapped. I love the cab ride in an E to witness the views from onboard! The only negative thing about this video is that it is only an hour in length and goes by so fast….but it is worth it!

This is a great video of BN’s old E units in commuter service out of Chicago.
