Running through the wide open, rolling terrain of Central Nebraska’s Sand Hills region is one of Burlington Northern Santa Fe’s busiest main lines. The Wyoming coal boom has transformed this former CB&Q route into a major corridor for moving “black diamonds” to eastern markets. High priority freight and intermodal traffic to the Pacific Northwest also polish these rails.

Many different types of locomotives are seen on this line. Most coal is pulled by SD70MACs, with older power including C30-7s, SD60Ms, SD40-2s and leased Oakway SD60s seen on occasion. The non-coal trains also include a variety of motive power from GE Dash 9-44CWs to EMD GP30s! Every train in this fascinating video is identified with its symbol, origin, and destination.

This program contains some great diesel action from old fallen flag road names like Burlington Northern, Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe, & Montana Rail Link, plus others like General Motors, Union Pacific, & Electro-Motive Division. Not to mention some maintenance of way equipment.

Locations include Birdsell Nebraska, Alliance which is at a population of 10,000 even when these scenes were recorded, Antioch siding, Ellsworth, Milepost 318 at West Ashby, Hyannis (not in Massachusetts on Cape Cod), Whitman, Hecla with a cab-less BN Booster unit referenced to an operating Union Pacific Big Boy since 2019 in one scene, Mullen, Seneca, Thedford, Milepost 231 at a lake, Halsey where in one scene, the BN U-Boats with UP C40-8 number 9276 make a smoke show to scare the mosquitos away, Middle Loop River, Dunning, Linscott, Anselmo with an AT&SF blue & yellow unit referenced to SP 2467 in one scene, Merna, Broken Bow with the same work train from Anselmo on one scene, Station Sign Fair, Berwyn, Ansley, Mason, Litchfield at milepost 145, & ends at the town of Ravenna (not the town in Kentucky for 2716, 587, & 7040/2008).

Unfortunately, the DVD doesn’t have any chapter menus for some reason, so you’ll have to watch the whole thing like an old-fashioned videocassette. But at least it’s a nice companion to the Powder River Basin Combo as well as Burlington Northern’s Crawford Hill by Iron Horse America.

All of these scenes were photographed in August of 1998 or 1999.

Another great Pentrex film. The Black hills sub doesn’t get a lot of attention and yes it may be bear in some places, but this dvd captures the beauty of what the plains of Nebraksa offers. See older Emds work hard as well as the New at the time SD70Macs in the popular BN executive paint scheme that were a staple of BN’s coal trains, even some in heritage 2 paint was seen. There is plenty of cascade green as well. This is a great video for any BN or BNSF fan.

A great video on the region represented. Pentrex did a fine job showing a nice variety of power and trains. Lots of coal (of course), with a few high priority manifests on the run. Very enjoyable. A great addition to my collection

I love the fact that this shows COAL TRAINS (lots of them) many with BN power at the very beginning of the BNSF! Now that coal trains are becoming an endangered commodity in this country this video is a great historical reference and fun to watch!

  5. KC fan

This is a neat video, that provides a great time capsule for the BNSF and BN SD70MACs. you also see many C30-7s leading trains and a couple SD60Ms, SD40-2s and SD60s. If you are a fan of train horns, this tape wont be for you, but if you high quality 1990s pentrex and the early BNSF, this show will be great for you. trains running through the scenic Nebraska landscape of the Sand Hills. This tape feels a bit more real than many of their nearly perfect productions, as many backlit scenes are included. one scene where they wait for multiple trains to pass one train on a siding, gives you the feel of spending a day trackside. Even a red and silver warbonnet or two will be found in the show. This show is worthy.
