Climb aboard as we take an exciting 70-mile trip over BNSF’s Cajon Subdivision from Devore to Barstow. You’ll have the best seat in the house! Our camera is at the very front of the lead unit on BNSF’s hottest Z train. The four GE Dash 9 44CWs on our train provide 17,600 horsepower for the battle to the summit of Cajon Pass! We’ll depart Devore and then just east of Keenbrook we’ll cross over onto the original line to Summit, which is preferred for most westbound traffic. It’s shorter and steeper but our train has enough horsepower to conquer the 3 percent grade.

Once past Summit, our train eases downgrade, clears the Upper Narrows and the scenic Lower Narrows, then makes good time streaking across the desert floor to Barstow. Along the way you’ll meet westbound hotshots, spot third main track construction and signal installations, and get a totally unique perspective of the famous hotspots that make Cajon such a popular railfanning destination.

Very pleasant cab ride up and through Cajon Pass, the train was really picking up speed racing through the desert at 70 mph! I loved it.

  3. Adrian Duncan

An excellent cab ride, although it does underscore the extent to which poor old Cajon Pass has been impacted by human activity. Still, the Pass is what it is, and this is a great record of the route! Too bad such video technology wasn’t available 75 years ago!!

The camera was mounted to the exterior of the front of the lead locomotive. So we have a straight ahead view. The train climbs the original 3% grade line to the summit of Cajon Pass.

At the Throttle, Vol. # 2. is a continuation of Vol. # 1. Starting from roughly where Vol. # 1 stops, the producers take us up the Cajon Subdivision. Similar to Vol. # 1, the camera is mounted to the front of the the engine, with the sound speakers at the camera. We hear all the sounds of the train, and the passing trains as it is on the out side of the cab. Narration is limited, and there are no in cab sounds heard. So, once again, the view we get is slightly different from what the cab crew would have. The make up of the 2 volumes is basically the same. However, for the viewers, there are differences. The territory covered is a rural scene, through the famous Cajon Sub. We get to see a much different look at Cajon than ever before. Adding to the interest is that the 3rd line was under construction at the time we are treated to this view point. From a general interest point of view, this is a better production than Vol. # 1. Again, it would have been nice to see different angles of photography, but with the more scenic views, more curvacur in the railroad, the overall makeup is worth the value. This video will highly complement any other Cajon Sub. video. I would recommend this to other rail fans, keeping in mind that the video is once again ‘straight ahead viewing’.
