The natural beauty of Arizona’s desert landscape created a dramatic setting for the unique group of shortline railroads that cut across the state in the early 1990s when this production was filmed. Powered by older-model Baldwin, Alco, and EMD locomotives, Arizona’s shortlines provide us with an excellent opportunity to view these classic machines in operation. When these smoking diesels are filmed against a desert alive with the colors of spring wildflowers, the result is a visually stunning experience.

The copper roads are exciting to watch. You’ll see the Copper Basin, San Manuel, Magma, and the Arizona Eastern in action. You’ll follow an Arizona and California train across the western part of the state to its headquarters in Parker. This regional line is a first-class operation and its newly painted diesels gleam under Arizona’s sunny skies. We conclude our presentation with a tour of the Apache Railroad and a ride on a road train to Holbrook and back. Five of the Apache’s ALCo power the train; it’s an awesome sight and the sound is incredible. This is an exhilarating experience you’ll want to savor over and over again!

I’m definitely a shortline fan, so this is an excellent program for me. Especially love the old Baldwin diesels.

  2. Matt

A neat look at short lines that have evolved or have gone extinct. The AZER GP20’s and SW’s in notch 8 are amazing. Apache Alcos put on a stellar show! All around great program with neat motive power.

  3. Alan Ross

Great Dvd. AZshaving so many relics socool. Seeing the EMD’s the GE’ s and the Alco’s and the Baldwin’s, how cool. Great Dvd with lots of action. Worth the money.

  4. Dylan Jones

It blows my mind that the state of AZ has (had) a lot of these relics operating. Everything you can think of. EMD’s, GE’s, Alco’s, Baldwin’s, you name it they have it out there. Awesome video and of course, lots of amazing shots that not many other video companies can produce!
