One of the most scenic stretches of railroad track in the entire country is about as far west as you can get – hugging the Pacific coastline between Los Angeles and San Diego. Known as the Surf Line or Surfline, this famous route was filmed in detail by Video Rails in the mid-1990s. The resulting two videos have now been combined on one DVD to bring you all the historic sites, exquisite scenery, and railroading action you look for. Included on this one DVD are two fantastic railroad videos:

Amtrak – The Surfline
Our journey begins at Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal and heads south to San Diego. You’ll stop at each station along the Surfline route to see the unique features of these historic boarding points, including the lovely San Juan Capistrano station. Highlights of your tour feature views of the famous Carlsbad wooden trestles, interesting motive power including Amtrak’s Dash 8-32 BWH, Santa Fe freight action, and the fantastic oceanfront scenery found along the Surfline! (1 hour)

Amtrak – The Surfline Cab Ride
Climb aboard a new General Electric P32-8BWH for a cab ride on Amtrak’s train 579, the San Diegan, at speeds of up to 90 mph!. You’ll witness many train meets and see gorgeous beach scenery along the fastest stretch of track on the West Coast. It’s a fantastic ride! (1 hour)

In my own words, fantastic video. This video is great because there is so much that this video has to offer. Most of the stuff in this video is stuff you will not see today. Even though I have never been to the Surfline, this video is helpful if I ever go to the Surfline. The cab ride video makes it even better. If you want the best video on the Surfline, this is the one.

The Amtrak Surfline is a spectacular video showing the picturesque sights of the Pacific Ocean mixed with lots of train action in Southern California. The narrator is a woman named Barbara Ann Kelley (only in the first half of the DVD); this is extremely rare in a railroad video! When it comes to locomotives, the star of the show is the General Electric DASH 8-32BWH (or P32-8BWH), one of a few hood-unit passenger models bought by Amtrak.

While they are fascinating to watch as they speed by, it is much more fun to ride in the cab on one of the so-called “Pepsi-Cans”. Inside, you can see the desktop control console, the head-end power control panel, and an old-style computer screen that contrasts with more graphical screens on newer locomotives. The Amtrak DASH 8 may be fading into history, but it will always be remembered with its own unique version of Phase III that was used before being repainted into Phases IV and V.

If this locomotive is your favorite or if you want to watch trains running along the shores of the Pacific, then the Surfline video is definitely worth watching.

One of the more interesting regions of the USA to view trains is Southern California, with the mountains to the east, the sea to the west, and all the large cities in the state. This video does a great job showing us all the interesting locations along the route connecting Los Angeles and San Diego. There is plenty of action along the way, as many trains are viewed, and the route is well documented. Add in the fact that it is a Combo, with the second 1/2 being a cab ride, and the viewer has nearly everything that can be anticipated for a Point A to Point B video production. The price is good, along with the image quality. Definitely a “must have” for all collectors of railroad videos.

This was a video rails production, and has the only female narrator that I’ve ever encountered on a train video. The narration was fantastic and very informative. Excellent footage and includes a cab ride. Plenty of “Pepsi-cans” which are my all time favorite Amtrak engines.

This production was one of the Video Rails titles that was later re released under the Pentrex brand. The show is in 2 parts, the first part runs the line from LA to San Diego with track side views showing Pepsi Can GE’s, and F40’s. Back ground info and history of the stations it passes are also covered. There’s some beach side shots around San Clemente that would be a little harder to get away with filming now days !!

Also shown was the filming of a movie using a SF warbonnet F45 which added a bit of variety. Also, if you’re a fan of the Santa Fe, this is worth a look. There’s a fair bit if Santa Fe action to be seen, plus a couple of SP freights as well.

The second half features a cab ride in a GE P32-8BWH from San Diego back to LAUPT. With beach side scenery on a sunny afternoon and some 90 mph running make for some nice scenes.

A worthy addition to the shelf.

Very interesting region, Southern Cal. You get views of the mountains, the Pacific ocean and all large cities in the region. You connect in LA and San Deigo. 2nd half shot in the can. Great views. Well worth the money.

The scenery captured throughout this video is beautiful. Many variations of the coastline are captures throughout the production and it is one of the best videos I now own for this particular route and train. A must have.
