Hitch a ride aboard Amtrak’s Cardinal after a very heavy snowfall. The journey picks up at first light east of Maysville, Kentucky, and concludes with the stop in Clifton Forge, West Virginia, after traveling along the Ohio River, and later the famous New River Gorge. It’s a rare treat to be on-board during the winter and on a crystal clear day. An added bonus are steam locomotive excursions on this same route through the New River region. Included are scenes of C&O 614 in the winter of 1985, and scenes of 2765, plus Nickel Plate 765 and Pere Marquette 1225, and Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 #261. The unique, and best selling, America by Rail series features specially composed music and award winning videography. The America by Rail series has sold more than 200,000 copies!

This was the most beautiful movies I ever watched as Amtrak cardinal travels on former Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad along the New River Gorge region in winter

For a program only an hour long, I was expecting a bit more than what I was given. I’m sure this would also be true for many others who have already viewed this DVD once or twice. I would say the highlights of it are the trips down “memory lane” to previous New River Train excursions pulled by several of our beloved “veteran” mainline excursion steam locomotives. The constant shot out the window of the Amtrak Cardinal train definitely makes the program a little unexciting at times. However, if you are an absolute “die-hard” fan of trains in the winter, then this DVD is most likely for you. 🙂

Good show of the new river gorge in the winter and spectacular steam action.

  4. Lloyd

a fascinating video as Amtrak cuts through the winter in Kentucky & West Virginia with us riding the train. Beautiful scenery along the way. To add to the video is several steam excursions with the old power showing their strength. A beautiful video that all will enjoy.

Such a great program following the Cardinal through West Virginia and flashbacks to New River Excursions, the 1991 NRHS convention and the 614 hauling coal trains. This is a must watch program.

What a great movie this is. You start your journey early in the morning east of Maysville, KY and concludes with you stopping in Clifton Forge. You travel along the Ohio River and the famous River Gorge. See steam engines excursions along the same routes. See trains like the C&O 614, the nickel plated 765 and more. Also listen to specially composed music made for this film. 5 stars and a running time of 60 minutes.

  8. Chase

This is a great DVD and must be seen by winter railroading fans. Great footage of the New River Gorge trips and C&O 614 hauling CSX coal trains when diesels were froze up.

  9. Ricky

For Those of you who didn’t know, the Riding on Amtrak footage was shot by Les Jarrett, While Greg Scholl shot lots of flashback steam shots between Huntington & Hinton, WV Through the New River Gorge.
