Rare 1950s film from the camera of Bill Price, featuring famous B&O locations Sand Patch and the “West End”. The name “Bill Price” is synonymous with steam era railroad photography and his action steam photos appear in numerous books and articles. Bill also made 8mm color movies while taking his famous photographs. Volume 1 from the “Price Collection” covers the Baltimore & Ohio in 1953 and 1954.

Filmed on the Pittsburgh Division over Sand Patch Grade and the Cumberland Division’s west end, you’ll see the “Big Six” 2-10-2, EM-1 2-8-8-4, P-1d 4-6-2, Qlba 2-8-2, and the Alco FA. The B&O’s famous passenger trains are seen including the “Washingtonian”. Each scene is documented with historical information by Bill Price and Harry Stegmaier, Jr. The story is told by announcer-actor-railfan Rege Cordic. Presented with a musical background. (Volume 2 of the “Price Collection” is Allegheny Rails, The Western Maryland.)

This programs features a variety of steam and diesel-powered freight and passenger trains operating over Sand Patch Grade, with famous steam locomotive models such as the Big Six 2-10-2’s, EM-1 2-8-8-4’s and T-3 4-8-2’s.

In Volume 1, There is a great variety of freight and passenger trains on one of America’s Very First Mainline railroads which have since been merged to CSX. The majority of this program is on the battle over Sand Patch Grade Between Cumberland & Pittsburgh, as the mighty Bix 6 Class 2-10-2’s are shown hauling loads, and also on pusher service. Overall, great songs from the synthesizer, and Mr. Rege Cordic did an outstanding job narrating this video.

The B&O was a very photogenic railroad. The equipment and scenery both were spectacular. About the only way to make them even better is through the great photography of the late Bill Price. He was a master of composition and we were lucky enough that he was there to document this wonderful railroad. A definite “must have” for all Beano fans.
