  1. Dan

An enjoyable program that will appeal to railfans and non-fans alike. As with Highball’s “Adventure” videos, “A Yellowhead Winter” has a documentary feel to it: the trains tie it all together, and along the way the focus broadens to include the setting, which is spectacular, and the wildlife, which is fascinating. There’s just the right amount of knowledgeable narration, music that enhances the production … and plenty of trains. This would make a nice choice for “Movie Night” with the family!

It is a good DVD, but it has a documentary feel to it instead of a railfan point of view. Beautiful scenery though going through the Canadian national parks.

This is not quite the normal train video that we are used to. It is more a documentary of VIA Rail’s “The Canadian” as it passes through the Canadian Rocky Mountains. This vodeo is more of the tourist type of movie. Starting in the flat lands of the prairie region of Alberta, making it’s way west we see the city of Edmonton and then the foothills, and on to the steep peaks. There is plenty of wildlife to see, with some standing and crossing the main highway stopping traffic, and traffic even having to drive around some wild sheep. There are a number of CNR freights, and VIA Rail’s “The Skeena” makes an appearance as it heads west towards Prince Rupert.
Wether a Railfan, a Tourist, or simply someone planning a travel vocation by rail, you will find this a very interesting video production. Well done Highball. Highly recommended.

I have this as part of the Canada by Rail set. It focuses on the VIA train and the mountains, with a few shots of passing CN trains. Very relaxing and set in one of the most spectacular places on earth.

That’s a good film, but I think this is not the best for someone how want to watch train’s actions

This DVD follows a format more similar to that of a film meant to attract tourists to the very scenic region around CN’s Yellowhead Pass. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. You get to follow the westbound Canadian’s route through delightful winter scenery, with footage from trackside and onboard the train. A smattering of CN freight trains provides some variety, but like I’ve said, expect the Canadian Rockies to be the focus of this DVD.
