Join the crew of the Belt Railway of Chicago’s “Cookie Job”. We ride in the cab and see the operation from the ground too. Learn about the EMD SW1200 switcher from the engineers. We’ll also visit the Operations Center and see the dispatcher at work.

This is a fascinating look at hard-core railroad switching, from a local job to yard switching… from “kicking cars” to assembling trains, we get to see it all.

This is vintage mid-nineties footage, shot using nineties equipment. It is not as sharp as programs shot today. Still, these are interesting scenes, many not covered elsewhere, and the narration is informative and top notch.

  1. Grumpy

This is an introduction as to how and why the railroad exists–by serving the customer. BRC 525 takes you to where a car’s journey begins and ends, at the customers door. Using an EMD SW-1200, the crew gets its marching orders, gathers the cars destined for the industries it will serve and makes the deliveries. This video should be owned by every model railroader with an interest in switching. Its not all horn blowing, bell ringing and ramming into rolling stock at 40 smph!
The only negative is, Nabisco closed this plant and moved their production to Mexico. RIP Cookie Monster?

very interesting look at a small rail road that serves many Class 1’s. Love the cab ride, and the feel of being on board the train. And yard switching is always very interesting.

We join the crew of the belt railway of chicago’s cookie job. You ride in the cab and see what they see. See the EMD SW 1200 switcher from the engineer’s view. All in all a great and informative film. The narration is great. Wirth the money.

I really liked this video. I confess I get bored with endless runby’s of long graffiti filled freights. This video takes you in the cab of an EMD switcher on the Belt Railway, and on the ground as it switches industries, including the Nabisco “Cookie Job”. The engineer walks you through throttle and brake use, and gives the viewer a lesson on how trains like these are really handled. For you model railroad sound aficionados, you will get a lesson on how trains really sound while switching, and hear the great 567 prime mover sounds. This is one to buy to learn everything you want to know about how railroads get their freight to and from their customers. After all, if that didn’t happen, there would be no railroads!
